The Cure
The Apostle Paul wrote in Romans 6:23, “the wages of sin is death.” The fair day wage of sin is death. Current statistics still confirm that one out of one people die. In fact, this stat has been fairly steady for the millennia. All men die from the same disease: sin. A death certificate only lists the mitigating factors.
Is there a cure? There is a pill for just about everything these days. Modern medicine has made some amazing advancements and discoveries in the last 100 years. One of the most exciting discoveries and the resulting immediate life-saving impact happened less than 100 years ago in Canada.
Known as one of medicine’s most incredible moments, scientists had been working tirelessly on a cure from a daunting disease taking countless children’s lives. These ambitious scientists went to a children’s hospital ward that was filled with diabetic children, most of them comatose and dying from diabetic keto-acidosis, it reeked of death and despair.
Imagine a room full of parents sitting at the bedside, waiting for the inevitable death of their child. This day was the day to test their hypothesis of a cure. The scientists went from bed to bed and injected the children with the new purified extract, insulin. The tension was palpable, so much hope in each syringe. For these parents, it was their last hope.
The injections commenced. As they began to inject the last comatose child, the first child injected began to awaken. One by one, all the children awoke from their diabetic comas. A room of death and gloom became a place of inexpressible joy and hope. They had discovered the cure. Imagine being in that room at that very moment as the sentence of death was lifted.
In many ways, that picture happens every day in the lives of people surrendering to Jesus. Paul wrote in Ephesians 2:5-6, “even when we were dead in our trespasses, [God] made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.”
Jesus is the cure, the purified extract of the relentless curse of sin – death. He alone reverses the state of death and gloom and transforms it into the prospect of joy and hope. His cure is greater than beating physical death. His cure crushes the worst death – spiritual death. Alive, saved, raised and seated is the great cure of the human soul.
